Wireless sports lighting controls with Casambi

A fully wireless control solution for the school’s No. 2 AFL Oval as the first phase — four intelligent pole-based nodes, mobile scene control, and 4G-connected remote diagnostics, moving into the upcoming next phase for No. 1 Daley Oval & Tennis Courts precinct.

The project

As schools continue to modernise their sporting facilities, there is increasing demand for lighting systems that are easier to operate, more energy efficient and capable of remote management without the complexity of traditional hardwired control systems.

Working alongside Jasstech, Tecmor delivered a fully wireless sports lighting control solution for Trinity Grammar School’s No. 2 AFL Oval, providing reliable control of the newly upgraded LED floodlighting while creating a future-ready platform that can continue to evolve with the school’s needs.

By leveraging Casambi BLE mesh technology, the installation eliminates the need for communications cabling between lighting poles while delivering seamless wireless control across the entire oval. The result is a flexible, highly resilient lighting network that supports everything from training sessions through to competition-level events.

Intelligent pole-based control

Each of the four 25-metre high mast poles was equipped with a fully pre-wired Tecmor EdgeBox enclosure, creating an intelligent control node at each pole. Rather than relying on a centralised controller, every pole operates independently. This distributed architecture significantly improves system reliability, as every pole acts as both a lighting controller and a wireless repeater.

With pole spacing of approximately 130 metres and an effective wireless range of approximately 200 metres between controllers, the system delivers robust communications across the entire AFL precinct without requiring underground communications cabling.

One of the primary objectives of the project was to make operating the sports lighting as simple as possible for school staff. Using the Casambi mobile application, authorised users can quickly select pre-configured lighting scenes depending on how the field is being used. The intuitive interface reduces operator training while ensuring the lighting system remains accessible to authorised users whenever required.

Remote visibility

To provide ongoing operational visibility, the installation includes a Casambi Cloud Gateway connected via a dedicated 4G internet connection. This cloud connectivity enables secure remote access to the entire lighting system, allowing authorised personnel to monitor system health, modify lighting scenes, diagnose faults and perform configuration changes without attending site.

Remote diagnostics significantly reduce maintenance response times while allowing support teams to identify potential issues before they impact facility operations. The solution also provides a foundation for future scheduling, energy reporting and advanced automation capabilities as the school’s smart campus strategy evolves.

Designed for expansion

While the project was delivered to modernise the AFL oval lighting controls, the underlying architecture has been designed with future expansion in mind. As Trinity Grammar School continues to invest in its sporting facilities, the system is ready to support technologies such as occupancy sensing, automated scheduling, energy monitoring, asset management and broader building management system integration.
