Modernising community sport with wireless lighting control

Eleven lighting towers turned into intelligent nodes on a self-healing wireless mesh, replacing hard-wired controls with a cloud-connected platform the club can actually run.

Tecmor partnered with Jasstech to deliver an intelligent wireless lighting control solution for the Boyne Island Tannum Sands Football Club, transforming the way the club operates and manages its sports field lighting.

Designed around the Casambi BLE mesh ecosystem, the project replaced traditional hard-wired lighting controls with a fully wireless, cloud-connected platform that provides simple local operation, remote management, and future-ready scalability. The solution gives the club complete control of its lighting infrastructure while significantly reducing the complexity and cost typically associated with sports lighting control systems.

The project

Community sporting facilities require reliable, high-performance lighting that is easy for volunteers and facility managers to operate. Traditional sports lighting systems often rely on extensive underground control cabling, fixed switchboards and limited functionality, making upgrades expensive and ongoing management difficult.

For the Boyne Island Tannum Sands Football Club, the objective was to deliver a modern lighting control system that would:

  • Simplify day-to-day operation
  • Provide wireless control across multiple lighting towers
  • Enable remote access for maintenance and support
  • Eliminate the need for inter-pole control wiring
  • Create a platform capable of future smart infrastructure integration

Tecmor designed and commissioned a wireless lighting control network across the football precinct. The installation consists of 11 high-mast lighting poles, each fitted with a Tecmor EdgeBox enclosure. Every pole acts as an intelligent node within a Bluetooth Low Energy mesh network, creating a resilient self-healing communications system capable of covering the entire site.

The wireless network syncs with an onsite Casambi Cloud Gateway, providing secure remote connectivity for system monitoring, diagnostics, scheduling and ongoing support. The result is a highly reliable distributed control architecture without the need for dedicated control cabling between lighting towers.

  • Mobile and tablet operation via the Casambi app
  • Multiple programmable lighting scenes
  • Remote diagnostics and support
  • Future-ready smart infrastructure platform
  • Scalable architecture for additional lighting or devices

Lighting scenes can be configured to suit different operational requirements, including training, competition, maintenance and shutdown modes, allowing the club to optimise energy consumption while maintaining the correct lighting levels for every activity.

Intelligent infrastructure

Rather than simply controlling lights, the project establishes a digital platform capable of supporting future technologies including energy monitoring, smart scheduling and bookings, environmental sensing, Building Management System integration, and additional Casambi ecosystem devices.

Because every lighting tower acts as part of the wireless mesh, the system provides inherent redundancy and can be expanded as the facility grows.
